Originally by: Sol'Kanar We've all seen it. The quiet and seemingly level-headed carebear having a wonderful time in his isolated perception of Eve. Courteous and polite, this friendly and often jovial inhabitant toils away at mining rocks or doing his part to rid the universe of infinitely re-spawning NPCs.
It doesn't take much, however, to bring this brittle facade crumbling down. This once stable pillar of Eve society quickly collapses into a hateful sociopath spewing vitriol and real life threats.
What heinous act could elicit such a change in demeanor? What outrageous event causes such polar behaviour? Steal their ore. Steal their salvage. Steal their loot. Shoot their ship. In other words, play the game the way it was intended, and a once rational player becomes a hateful sociopath hell-bent on hurting you in game and out.
I've seen carebears petition another player for an offensive name not because they were offended by it, but because they were angry and wanted to "ruin" another player any way they can. I've watched them unload with a laundry list of personal attacks about me, my mother, and my own children. I've been personally threatened with bodily harm more times than I can count because I won a fight or stole something in game.
I submit to you that the pirates and thieves of Eve are more level-headed and well-adjusted than those they antagonize. I've tangled with other pirates and thieves, and win or lose, have never been subject to the abuses I so regularly receive from carebears. In Eve, just as in real life, it's the quiet ones you have to worry about.
I come at your wife / girlfriend with a knife in my hand and a cool, calm and emotionless expression on my face. She doesn't know me, I don't really know her. She screams, yells, throws things at me.
I stab here countless times, she bleeds and dies. You enter the scene and see this and you do everything in your power to harm me anyway humanly possible. I avoid your glutches.
I submit to you, cold hearted killers are more level headed than the victims.
Real life comparsion, but I happen to believe people playing the game are real people, not pixels. So if another player causes me harm, it was a person to person, not pixels to pixels.
As such, the quoted mentality is rubbish. ------ Dare to challenge me? |
